Adding Two-Digit Numbers

Adding double-digit numbers is just like adding single-digit values, you just go through the process of addition more than once. When you add two-digit numbers you add the columns together, not the entire numbers. For example you wouldn't want to try and add 78 and 57 as complete numbers. It's easier to break those numbers down into bite-sized pieces. You would start by adding the numbers in the ones column and then move to add the numbers in the tens column. That example was a little tough because it includes some carrying. Let's look at some simple examples...
24 + 45 = 69
37 + 11 = 48
82 + 6 = 88

To Carry or not to Carry

Level two in adding two-digit numbers will have you adding numbers that involve carrying. We already spoke a bit about carrying. If the answer in one column is greater than nine (9), you carry the "1" to the next column on the left. In our earlier example, if you have the problem 78 + 57 the first addition would be the ones column. That value would be "15." You need to write down the "5" and move the "1" to the tens column. Adding the tens column would have you adding 1 + 7 + 5. That sum is "13" which you now write down in your answer. Your final sum would be "135." Here are some two-digit addition problems that require carrying.
48 + 32 = 80
29 + 29 = 58
95 + 16 = 111
75 + 87 = 162
